Under the Microscope

3 11 2008

2HBe and I had great fun exploring the digital microscopes in class today. We were supposed to be looking at parts of plants, but wound up making an exciting discovery! One group discovered a bug in their slide, so we maximised the magnification and took some pictures and a video.

Isn’t he beautiful?! We named this little bug Alex, as we weren’t sure if it was a boy or a girl.

Here are some photos of us discovering Alex:

We weren’t sure what kind of bug it was, so I asked the class what to do. They all said, “Google it!” But what did that mean exactly? One suggestion was to do an image search for Aphid (as that’s what I thought it might be). We decided to look up some photos of aphids via Comp Fight and found this photo. It looked quite a lot like Alex, so we think it probably is an aphid. Plus, Alex the Aphid has a nice ring to it!

Isnt it exciting when a lesson goes off on a tangent, but its great in that sense to be able to divert to the most exciting aspect of the students. Nice blog. We have our class page at tamakitoday.blogspot.com
